Health Insurance

Many patients will wish to seek reimbursement for mental health services through their health insurance program, and this is indeed commonly available through most group or employer-sponsored plans.  The best way to determine what portion of my services will be reimbursed by your insurance company is to contact them by calling the customer service phone number on the back of your insurance card.  When speaking with them, you will want to ask your insurance company the following questions:

  • What percentage of each visit is covered by my insurance?  What is my copay per session?
  • What is the standard or "contract" rate allowable for a single therapy session (often referred to as procedure code 90806)
  • Do I have a deductible I must meet before my benefits begin?
  • How many sessions per year are covered by my insurance?
  • Which services are covered?  Individual therapy?  Couples' therapy?  Psychological testing?

Of course, many individuals who have health insurance elect not to use it for coverage of mental health services, and instead pay for therapy as an out of pocket expense.  Most often, this is due to concerns about the privacy of protected health information, and the sharing of this information with health insurance companies and their affiliated entities.  Although the many inadequacies and inefficiencies of the health insurance industry have led me to minimize my partnership with it, I do firmly believe that those with insurance should be able to use it to pay for psychotherapy.  I also greatly appreciate the right of the individual to maintain control over their protected medical and mental health information.  Should you choose not to use your health insurance to cover my services, your personal information and medical records will remain completely confidential, with no access granted to third party payors or their affiliates.
